The Srisailam Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and one of the 18 Shakti Peethas in India. It is situated on a hill amid the Nallamala forests on the banks of the Krishna River — making it one of the most sacred sites in the country.

The Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Vijayanagara Empire and Chhatrapati Shivaji all contributed to the temple's development. In the 15th century, Sri Krishnadevaraya built the eastern Rajagopuram.
